Comments: I was a Crew Chief and then Flight Engineer A Company, 228th at Bear Cat in 1969. Only thing I remember about my bird was: it was a modified A model, last three tail numbers were 003. We called it "NO BALLS 3" my Crew Chief, Barry Lewis and I painted two large dice showing snake eyes just forward of the right door. I'd like to here from any Flight Platoon or any of the great maintenance people, Door Gunners and pilots who remember me or flew "No Balls 3". Two of my favorite pilots were Lt. Ellis and Paul Getz who died in a crash out side of Long Binh while flying Camp's bird 045, he was a good man and terrific AC.

Comments: I was an Avco Lycoming Engine tech rep assigned to B Co 228th. I was there 68 and 69 and worked out of HHC 15 TC Bn. I commuted every other week to LZ Sharon via huey, snake or hook from Red Beach and stayed with Joe Dykstra the Boeing rep. I moved down to Bearcat with the 15th TC, B co was next door and the engine shop and maintenance was within walking distance. Still commuted to Chu Chi,Phu Loi, Tay Ninh and Phuc Vinh to help other reps on T-53 engine shop support. Left country in Dec 69. Unfortunately it has been so long I can't remember many names. I still have my crest and photos but can't find my patch.

Comments: I was part of the first group of "turn-around" pilots in 1967 meaning we came right from flight school and went right into the Chinook program and of course, right to Viet-Nam after that. Our first CO was Major Robinson and he took us in as a "test" and I guess we did him right as he requested all the "Wobbly Ones" (W-1 warrants) that he could get his hands on. The times we all shared in An Khe, Chu-Lai and Phu-Bai are things that I wouldn't trade for anything. Well, I guess I would trade the day that Larry Carlisle got killed, but that's a little more personal than I care to get into. Currently flying wheeled Boeings again only this time it has four engines and solid wings. Andy Dulay UPS B-747 Captain.

Comments: Great website. I am trying to find out any information on a mascot that the 228th assault helicopter Battalion had. The dogs breed was a Chinook. The dog was bought by Vertol Company, a Division of Boeing in 1966. The dog was given to the 228th as a mascot in An Khe, Vietnam. The guys named this dog "CHARGER". The dog was accepted by a Lt. C Clark, Commander of the 228th AHB. We are trying to find out, if anyone knows what may have happened to CHARGER, as nothing ever was said in the newspaper about CHARGER returning to the US. If anyone knows of any information on CHARGER you may contact me at angelvet7@earthlink.net Would appreciate any help. Thanks and Welcome Home to the 228th

Comments: Been here before and never fails as I go through the new entries I find more of my friends who have signed in. Thanks to Jim for all the work on this web and hope this web will continue. I was stationed in Bearcat from 12-69 through 6-70 and then transferred to Phouc Vinh and was in HHC till Jan 71. If there are any new people who do recognize my name and or were there at the same time. I still need to find anybody who was in Bearcat approx date would be around May 70 when they dumped a bunch of Army Surplus and dumped almost a thousand gallons of contaminated fuel over it to destroy it. I was at the side of the slit trench watching and trying to keep the "kids" from going into the pit to scavenge. There was a small probably six to ten year old kid standing next to me who threw a match and the whole pit went up in a super heated ball of flame. I kicked the kid in the pants as a reaction and ran as fast as I could. I got a burn like a severe sun burn but the kid dropped into the pit. I did not mean to send him to his death but need to know if there is any one out there who can remember that fire.It was in the dumps. ..........Also there was in Phouc Vinh about Sept or Oct of '70 a OH 13 Bell helicopter that had backed out of the reventment and caught his tail rotor in a barbed wire fence. Of course the chopper was torn apart and burned as well as the pilot burned. He ran out of the chopper and was totally on fire. I used my shirt to put the flames out but he was badly burned and died a few hours later. If either of these are remembered by any of my comrades out there I would really like to hear from you. It is very important that I find as many people as soon as possible. If you do not want to send via email you can send to my P.O Box 541 Tomah, WI.54660 Again thanks to Jim for all you are doing with this web !!!! Welcome home Brothers. Was glad to serve with a great bunch of warriors. Mike
